What Is Plant-Based Water-Soluble Nonwoven? A Complete Guide

Plant-based water-soluble nonwoven is a plant-derived, water-dissolvable nonwoven material, not a petroleum derivative. It dissolves completely in 90°C water within 5 to 10 minutes, leaves no microplastics, and continues to biodegrade in soil and water. It is independently certified to ISO 14851. EzyGreenPak engineers this material into everyday products such as bags, packaging, aprons and lampshades.

How it works

The material is engineered to stay strong and printable in everyday use, then dissolve on demand in hot water. Placed in 90°C water, it breaks down through hydrolysis into smaller molecules within 5 to 10 minutes, leaving no microplastics behind. What remains continues to biodegrade in soil and water into carbon dioxide, water and biomass.

How plant-based water-soluble nonwoven works: stays strong and printable in everyday use, dissolves in 90C water within 5 to 10 minutes, then biodegrades in soil and water

Is it safe, and does it really biodegrade?

Yes. The material is independently certified to ISO 14851, with over 60% biodegradation within 71 days and over 90% within two years. It also passes REACH SVHC chemical-safety testing and environmental ink testing. Test reports are available on request.

How it compares to conventional materials

Conventional plastics such as PP and PE are water-insoluble and do not easily biodegrade. Plant-based water-soluble nonwoven is different. It dissolves in household-temperature hot water and leaves no microplastics. Unlike many compostable materials, it needs no industrial composting facility to break down.

What it is used for

EzyGreenPak turns the material into bags, packaging, aprons and lampshades, serving clients across six sectors: banking, fashion, luxury, retail, university and healthcare. EzyGreenPak has supplied finisher bags at the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon for two consecutive years, in 2025 and 2026. In 2025, the bags reached every finisher across 74,000 runners.

Frequently asked questions

Is plant-based water-soluble nonwoven a plastic?

No. It is not a conventional petroleum-based plastic. It is a plant-based material designed to dissolve in 90°C water and leave no microplastics, independently certified to ISO 14851.

Does it leave microplastics?

No. It dissolves fully in 90°C water and continues to biodegrade into carbon dioxide, water and biomass.

How long does it take to dissolve?

5 to 10 minutes in 90°C water.

Is it certified?

Yes. It holds ISO 14851, REACH SVHC, and environmental ink certifications.
